Two potential Chinese investments from the automotive sector could be heading to Slovakia, according to reports in today’s newspapers, with the possibility of yet another car plant being located here.

Firstly, the company Qoros has its eyes on Slovakia as the potential site for its new European plant, according to daily Pravda today. The potential investment was disclosed yesterday by the Slovak Automotive Industry Association (ZAP). Head of ZAP, Jaroslav Holecek said the potential investor was weighing up opening a plant to produce vans and buses.

The other Chinese company to announce its entry to Slovakia is BYD, which has revealed plans to set up a development centre here to develop electronic vehicles, probably in Bratislava, writes daily Hospdarske Noviny today. The car manufacturer, China’s sixth largest, is already in talks with a Slovak partner.

Head of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Marian Farkas, explained to the daily that the company has only held negotiations with potential partners from Slovakia, mentioning specifically a Bratislava-based company. The company plans to produce the vehicles in China, however.

Slovakia is already the biggest car producer per capita in the world, with its three resident car makers Volkswagen, Peugeot-Citroen and Kia turning out almost one million cars in total last year.
